W10 fall to Hambledon

Wickets and wides crush Petersfield's hopes

Another sunny day (what a summer!) saw Hambledon visit the Heath to take on the Petersfield W10 ladies who won the toss and elected to field first.

Alison Furse and Beth Svarovska opened the bowling looking to better the tie that we had in the last game against Hambledon and things started well with some accurate bowling and excellent fielding in the heat however the wides soon started to appear as most of the bowlers struggled with their line. Jo Russell took a smart caught behind from the bowling of Cat Christie, and Charlie Hawkes a return catch from her own bowling as Hambledon ran singles well but Petersfield restricted the boundaries. Georgie Robinson bowled Amanda Bembridge and Alison Furse took a smart reflex catch from the bowling of Claire Wright before Wright had to retire injured with what looked like a nasty knee injury. Overall Hambledon scored 121 runs, 43 of which were wides that Petersfield gave them and with the 4 wickets lost posted a net score of 301. Jo Dallas and Lucy Harfield were the two batters to post double figure scores.

Petersfield set out to attack the Hambledon score feeling that 301 was a getable target however despite 2 six's from Beth, the first pair for Petersfield struggled losing 3 wickets all to catches in the first four overs. Charlie and Georgie steadied the ship with Charlie especially hitting several boundary fours along the ground until Georgie was caught going for one shot too many. Sophie Beacham and Jo Russell ran well before Sophie continued the trend firstly getting bowled by Debbie Jay and then caught by Jo Dallas from the bowling of Lucy Stewart. With two pairs to bat Petersfield needed 52 to win but they had 8 overs or 48 balls in which to get them - could they bat smart and take the runs in a risk free way? Things started well for Rachel Martel and Cat Christie as they took singles and punished the bad ball however the dismissal of Rachel to another catch left the final pair needing 34 for another tie. Alas it was not to be as some good bowling from Jenny Dallas and the loss of 3 wickets left Petersfield with a loss by 29 runs. Frustratingly Petersfield had 7 batters who reached double figures with Charlie (19) and Jo (13) leading the way on a net score basis. Overall we scored more runs than the opposition before deducting wickets lost but wides (43 v 24) and wickets lost (10 v 4) cost us the game.
