In 5 years that this girls team has been together they never beaten Hursley Park outdoors but they went into Wednesday's third match in three days knowing that a win would secure them their 1st league title.
Hursley won the toss and elected to bat and the coaches tactic of putting our most accurate bowlers on to open back fired as Grace Geddes really set about our attack scoring at over 10 runs per over. A quick change of tack by the Captain brought Georgie Russell and Millie Green into the attack with Millie removing county U15 player Louise Bucknell with a great delivery that jagged back in off the seam for 8. Georgie Russell then bowled Grace for 24 (from only 14 balls) and the Petersfield tails were up in a game that was destined to ebb and flow. Penny Dirou came in at 3 and stole the initiative back striking the ball hard eventually retiring for 50 not out from 41 balls but some good bowling from Annie Burnell-Nugent, Fifi Goldsmith and Ottilie Lock and another wicket and a run out from Millie Green (4 overs 2 for 15) and a strong finish from the returning Georgie Russell (4 overs 1 for 13) left Hursley on a competitive 133 for 4 from their 20 overs, could Petersfield reply?
Form batters Izzy and Georgie Russell took to the field against two county spin bowlers. An interesting contest swung against Peef as a misfield and hesitant call for 2 left Georgie Russell run out by inches for 5 in the 2nd over. Momentum firmly with Hursley, as the spin twins bowled their 8 overs straight with Izzy falling for 7 and Freya Pitt bowling 4 overs for only 7 runs. However there were more twists to come as Hursley introduced more pace into their attack enabling Lily George to score 15 before retiring. A quick 4 and out from Annie brought Millie Green and Holly Haynes together at 70 for 3 with 13 overs gone. Millie and Holly really accelerated the scoring taking the score to 111 before Millie was run out backing up at the non strikers end for a great 29 including 4 fours. Hope was lost as Ottilie joined Holly with 17 needed from the last over. 4, W, No Ball and some scrambled singles and with 3 balls to go Holly carved a 4 over backward point to leave us needing just 3 to win from the last 2 balls before bowler Sophie Butcher regained her composure and beat Holly's bat with both balls. A great effort in a great game with Holly finishing on 23.
