After a 2 hour journey to Bournemouth following an incident on the A31, Petersfield Captain Izzy Russell won the toss and elected to field in this crucial clash of the league's two unbeaten sides. With only one team being promoted the home and away games against Wessex may well prove crucial to the team's destiny this season. The team welcomed back Heath Clarke and gave a debut to Anya Holtshausen.
Georgie Russell and Holly Haynes opened the bowling as usual, Georgie struggled to find her length in the conditions but Holly settled in well (4-0-11-1) bowling consistent away swing that troubled the Wessex openers. Despite this it took 6 overs and 25 run before Haynes clipped the off bail of Elsa Veit for 9. In the next over Heather Clarke found the edge of the other opener to be well caught by keeper Izzy Russell to leave Wessex 26 for 2. Heather and Millie Green also struggled to find their line as the 29 extras piled up but the introduction of Anya Holtshausen saw her clean bowl Anna Veit for a top scoring 12 for her debut Petersfield wicket. The smart introduction of Lily George (3.4-0-7-1) and Simone Hellyer (5-0-11-3) then swung the game back Petersfield's way as both bowled with accuracy removing the last four Wessex wickets for just 7 runs, giving Petersfield a total of 78 to chase down.
Izzy and Georgie Russell then opened the batting against Muppavarapu who was one of the league's leading wicket takers. Both started well until Izzy missed a straight one with the score on 12. This brought Lily George to the crease, she and Georgie pushed hard without taking any risks with Lily especially hitting many 2's on the large outfield. Petersfield did leave some singles out there but it was a quick run that did for Lily, run out by a direct hit from Muppavarapu for a run a ball 38, Heather Clarke then hit her first ball for 4 before toeing one up to Muppavarapu again before the calming influence of Georgie Russell hit the winning runs, remaining unbeaten on 26 giving Petersfield the win by 4 wickets with 10 overs to spare.
Roly's winning run continues, our destiny is in our own hands, every team should have a lucky dog in my view.
