The Ladies team travelled to Overton after challenging the Division Four North league winners to a friendly in an unofficial playoff of the two Division Four league winners. Petersfield won the toss and elected to field on another hot day.
Opening bowlers Holly Haynes (4 overs for 6 runs) and Georgie Russell (3 overs for 6 runs) led the way with some tight quick bowling which the Overton openers struggled to put away. Overton opener Jenny Wilson started the scoreboard moving with a couple of leg side boundaries but departed after playing a drive into the hands of Georgie Russell at short mid wicket from the bowling of Fifi Goldsmith for 17. Charlie Moody was then clean bowled by Kate Harfield without scoring and when Ermelinda Rende was run out by Georgie Russell at the non strikers end Overton were in some trouble. Emily Smallbrook and Rachel Sunderland started to build a total before Sunderland was run out, Georgie Russell was the fielder again with a smart pick up and throw to her wicket keeping Sister who took the bails off cleanly. Then Isabelle Masterson entered the game as an under 13 player making her senior Ladies debut. She picked up a wicket in her second over clean bowling Smallbrook for 12 before trapping Jayne Rogers in front of her stumps for 6, Isabelle finished with 2 for 9 from her 3 overs and Overton closed their innings on 94 for 6 from their 25 overs.
Izzy and Georgie Russell started the Petersfield reply and had 21 on the board in just two overs before Izzy was unlucky to be run out backing up at the non strikers end after the bowler deflected another straight drive from Georgie onto the stumps. Holly Haynes and Millie Green both quickly departed after being clean bowled as Overton rotated their bowlers and wicket keepers to ensure that they only used their best four bowlers. This brought the ever dependable Simone Hellyer to the crease and she and Georgie brought some calm to the proceedings until Georgie was adjudged LBW to Rachel Sunderland moments after losing the ball with another powerful straight drive scoring 32 including 6 boundary four’s. Simone was then bowled by Skipper Wilson for a well made 14 leaving Petersfield needing 28 to win with only 2 wickets remaining. Time for Isabelle Masterson once again. She hit two consecutive four’s down to third man whilst Fifi Goldsmith combined a mixture of cover drives and solid forward defensive shots to keep out the accurate Overton bowling. The batters took their time and gradually worked down their target and as the scores inched closer and the pressure rose Overton cracked and their accuracy deserted them as Petersfield won by 2 wickets with Isabelle and Fifi finishing 11 and 16 not out respectively.
This was a great win for this young team against an opposition full of adult players, well played all and well done Isabelle.
