Petersfield beat Easton to move up to 2nd in the table

Archie Maclean's maiden hundred sees Peef return with the win

Petersfield in 3rd place in the league travelled to Easton and Martyr Worthy in 2nd place on another baking hot day in the Hampshire sun. Skipper Shore called correctly and elected to bat knowing that he scored a century against Easton in the home match between these two sides earlier in the season.

Easton had a plan and their wicket keeper was keen to remind us of that as he encouraged everyone to slow things down and keep calm. That plan involved some early spin and deep cover field placements as Henry found his groove until an early sweep and a quick LBW decision sent him on his way for 14, 1-0 to Easton and their plan with the score on 37-1 from just 5 overs. Career diplomat, Ash Spencer, entered the fray and helped to calm things down whilst taking advantage of the lighting fast outfield and quick bowling now on offer whilst at the other end young Archie Maclean, who scored a duck against these opponents earlier in the year, was fast finding out just how good that new bat that he brought on Thursday really was. Spencer departed for 41 giving an easy catch to gully first ball after the drinks break with the score already on 127 after just 15 overs. Any respite that Easton thought that might bring was short lived as Joe Clarke picked up where Spencer left off as he and the set Maclean consistently found the boundary rope. Now Joe is a man of the people and he generously gave a return catch to Gary Davies for 38 from only 31 balls to bring Georgie Russell to the crease with Archie now in the nervous nineties and the score on 218 from only 24 overs and they were there together when Archie brought up his maiden club and league hundred with a single. Russell hit a couple of nice boundaries before a mix up saw her run out for 12 and the introduction of Noah Gillings (7 overs 1 for 24) slowed the run rate down. Cass Marks played some nice shots for his 11 as he is still finding his feet in league cricket and debutant, Jago, scored his 1st league runs before he returned a catch to returning spin bowler Dickety. Inbetween those two events Maclean the younger was finally dismissed, bowled by Dickety for 142 from just 99 deliveries, hitting 23 4's and 3 6's in a career best (to date) knock. This brought the experienced pair of Russell and Straw to the crease for the innings finale and they added 33 in just over 4 overs before Russell was dismissed for 17 with Petersfield finishing on 333 for 8 from their 45 overs. Tea was kindly provided by Easton at the break.

Petersfield were determined to start well and that they did with the older Maclean removing Ben Gillings with his 1st ball, caught by Cass Marks, and when Joe Clarke clean bowled Sam Dickety in the following over Easton were in some trouble at 12 for 2. Noah Gillings who was having a good game and fellow youngster George Sanders rebuilt the innings well until Adam Kidd removed Gillings LBW for 31. Field then used their spin options to their advantage to take pace off of the ball. Chris Russell bowled Sanders with his third ball with one that drifted through the gate which then opened things up with Russell picking up three further wickets including a good catch from a bad ball by fellow spinner Straw in the deep and when Georgie Russell took a simple chance from Straw Easton were 171-8. They showed some resistance until the returning Clarke and Kidd took a wicket each, with Kidd breaking the leg stump with the final ball to wrap things up for Field who won by 114 runs.

It was a late finish to a day which will live long in the memory of some, congratulations young man, we were all glad that we were there to be part of it.
