The final game of the season saw Hayling Island travel to the Heath in what turned out to be a rain effected game.
Petersfield lost the toss and the visitors decided to bat first. Oscar Walker had bowled 4 balls before the rain came down hard and saw a lengthy delay. After the rain Petersfield kept it tight but the Hayling batsman started to hit regular boundaries and put our depleted bowling attack under pressure. Frank Straw picked up the first wicket thanks to Rich Lacks excellent catch at square leg. James Walton managed to get the next wicket not long after but after this the going was tough. A big stand of 140 from the Hayling batsman and some big hitting towards the end meant Petersfield were chasing 219 off 22 overs after the overs had been reduced Richard Lack finished with 2-28.
The Petersfield reply got off to a bad start when Dave Marshall was bowled for 4 and the rain came again. 15 minutes of rain would have meant the game would have been cancelled but with two minutes left the sun came out and Petersfield had to bat in some trying conditions. A swashbuckling innings of 63 from Tom Sherry was the stand out but Petersfield finished up on 117 for 9.
The 1st XI finished the season having achieved the goal of staying up but the season could have looked very different if we had managed to chase some small totals early In the season and had some better weather throughout. A huge well done to every one involved it has been a great first season in Division Two and we have a lot of positives to build on next year.
