XI travelled to Colden Common, Otterbourne & Sporting Wessex with a few changes to the side, it was even more significant then that they comprehensively defeated the opposition by ten wickets, the highlight of which was a superb faultless first wicket unbeaten
partnership by Henry Shore (102 not out) and captain Dave Marshall (46 not out).
Calden
Common won the toss and unsurprisingly on a hot but breezy day elected to bat. Their openers were conservative in their approach leaving a lot of deliveries and relying on extras, Oscar Maclean (1 for 26) bowled well and was unlucky not to pick up more than
one wicket, he removed opener Champion for 0 in his opening spell. Oli Simpson (1/46) bowled with pace but struggled slightly with his line. A good second wicket partnership between Matt Burrows (24) and Adam Burrows (54) made use of the rapid outfield before
Nathan Barlow (3/36) pulled the scoring rate back, conceding only 5 runs off his first three overs and bowling Matt Burrows. Barlow in partnership with Dave Evans (0/31) from the other end gave control allowing Petersfield to chip away, Barlow removed both
Nori and Watts for 9 each. Calden Common tried to push on but the ultimate all-rounder Shore, who kept wicket for over half the innings, came on to bowl quickly removing Lauder for 1 to good catch by James Stratford-Tuke diving forward taking it low to the
ground at mid-on. Shore then ran out Ravenhill for 3 while Tom Horwood (0/10) came on to help complete the overs. Colden Common finished on 190 for 8 off their 45 overs.
The
Petersfield innings was opened by Shore and Marshall, it was without chance, Shore was the more flamboyant of the two playing some languid cover drives and shots over the top, while Marshall was a calming influence and picture of determination and obstinacy
to ensure an emphatic victory, albeit he to stroked the ball to the boundary and ran hard to rotate the strike and make the most of any miss fielding as the opposition tired. Meanwhile the remainder of the Petersfield top order watched with glee for their
opportunity to come but due to Shore’s and Marshall’s mastery it wasn’t to. This was Shore’s fourth century of the season and Marshall’s second fifty in addition to an earlier century.
